THIRD PARTY, MORE EVIDENCE OF ITS VIABILITY

There are many geysers in Iceland, including Geysir, from which the English word is derived. A new one has come on the scene named Gnarr.  Can a third party candidate survive in a national election? One might think otherwise due to the demise of most third party candidates. At first they made a big splash only to sink faster than a stone. We remember them all, Wallace, Anderson and Perot; not to mention minor Green and Libertarian candidates such as Ralph Nader. They all started off like geysers, only to become old geezers. Today, however we are facing something far different than those of the past. We not only have and economic crisis, but some might say a Constitutional crisis as well. This brings us to Iceland.

Iceland was literally frozen economically to death during the past year. The cause of their deep freeze could be wholly blamed on their banking industry. Instead of being safe havens, they became gambling dens; paying interest way above the market to mostly gullible foreign depositors from the British Isles. Not all of those who wanted out, were able to do so in the inevitable stampede to get their money back. The depositors had nowhere to turn. Iceland's banks were broke. Vengeance was in the air. The government had to step in to make the depositors whole. Many of the responsible citizens of Iceland were not too happy about this predicament.

In steps an iconoclast in the name of Jon Gnarr ( a popular radio host and comedian)  of the Best Party. He is Iceland's Tea Party Candidate. And to everyone's surprise he is leading in the polls. The "we the people" of Iceland are sending a message, "the old ways of doing things are no longer tolerated." Mr. Gnarr is projected to be named the next mayor of Reykjavik, the capitol city.  To quote Mr. Gnarr, "I just like the idea of giving traditional politics the finger."  And so do many of its citizens. The lesson to be learned here is that all that is impossible is possible this coming election year. And in 2012 we double down our bet.
