Teachers union boss Randi Weingarten claimed the Florida decision is ‘how wars start’
With the repeal of Disney’s special self-governing status in Florida, the dynamic of woke corporations attacking conservative states is being reversed, historian Victor Davis Hanson told Fox News Friday.
Hanson told “Hannity“ the dissolution of Disney’s self-governing status is an ironic counteraction to the trend of corporations like Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines and Major League Baseball denouncing or acting against a center-right legislative decision.

Hanson pointed to Coke and MLB’s outcry over Georgia’s passage of an election security law, which led to the All-Star Game being relocated from Atlanta to Denver – as well as pressure from other corporations against a now-overturned policy in North Carolina requiring people to use the bathroom designated to their birth sex. The NCAA and several companies threatened action after then-Gov. Pat McCrory supported the legislation.
Outrage over the Disney decision is “ironic” given that context, Hanson said.
“Over the last decade we’ve been told that private business can really force these conservative states to their knees – if they have ID laws, Major League Baseball will boycott them, or [North] Carolina has just two bathrooms, and all of our California companies here will shut out billions of dollars,” he said.
“So now it’s sort of reverse that. Not really. It’s not even equal yet, but the states are saying we can do this too. We can pass laws that reflect our values, just like you can boycott our states.”
He added that there have been some eccentric reactions to the move, including from American Federation of Teachers chief Randi Weingarten, who claimed decisions like DeSantis’ are “how wars start.”

During the Wednesday night episode of MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, several panelists urged mainstream media outlets to ditch “neutrality” and “objectivity” when covering Trump-supporting Republicans in order to save “democracy.”

During the Wednesday night episode of MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, several panelists urged mainstream media outlets to ditch “neutrality” and “objectivity” when covering Trump-supporting Republicans in order to save “democracy.”
The segment began with host Lawrence O’Donnell talking about a tweet from actor Rob Reiner which read, “A vote for Republicans is a vote to destroy democracy.”
O’Donnell then asked his guests, NYU professor and former New Republic editor Peter Beinart, former Time magazine managing editor Richard Stengel and former Republican campaign consultant Stuart Stevens what they thought about Reiner’s tweet and how the media should cover it, if the statement were actually true, in the context of the New York Times’ original mission statement.

O’Donnell went to Beinart first, asking, “‘A vote for Republicans is a vote to destroy democracy.’ We would, of course, prior to this period we’re living in, immediately classify that as an opinion. And a rather wild one, especially before the Trump era. But it might be a fact, and if it’s a fact, how does journalism, how does The New York Times, and publications like that, deal with it?”
Beinart answered, “But what’s important about the statement that you read about The Times’ initial founding statement, or about the Washington Post’s current statement, ‘Democracy dies in darkness,’ is that these institutions do not say that they are neutral on the question of democracy.”
He continued saying that if they’re not neutral on democracy then they can’t be neutral on Trump who is destroying democracy: “And so if one party, the dominant wing, the Trump wing of one party, is actually trying to overthrow American democracy. You as a newspaper have to be against that, you can’t be neutral on that. You can’t present both sides on that.”
O’Donnell then turned to Stengel, asking, “Is the Republican Party anti-democracy? And if so, what does Time magazine have to say about it?”

Stengel responded saying, “Well, Lawrence, I used to tell my folks at Time, there aren’t two sides to a lie. That you can’t be neutral in the face of corruption. You can’t be neutral in the face were where someone’s trying to end democracy. We can’t ignore that.”
“You can be impartial. But you cannot be neutral, you can’t be neutral and in the face of someone ending democracy. You can’t simply chronicle the end of democracy. Then that’s the end of a free press,” Stengel continued.
He added, “There is no objectivity when there is an authoritarian party that’s trying to end the protections of the press and democracy as we know it.”
Stengel tweeted Thursday night about the subject as well, writing, “I always told my journalists, there aren’t two sides to a lie. Yes, you should be non-partisan, but not neutral. Journalists must be biased in favor of the truth and facts. Biased in favor of democracy itself. We protect the press so the press can protect democracy. Let’s do that.”

During the episode, Stevens commented on whether voting for Republicans is a “vote to destroy democracy,” saying, “I really don’t see how you can argue with that because the Republican Party official platform is what Donald Trump says it should be. And Donald Trump does not believe that we live in a democracy. He doesn’t believe that Joe Biden is the legally elected president.”
O’Donnell then returned to Beinart with a question on how the media should cover candidates who questioned the 2020 election.
Beinart stated, “I think part of it has to do with this kind of stripping away the euphemism that journalists sometime rely on. And calling things by their name – not saying that Republicans ‘allege’ voter fraud … But to actually use plainer blunter language.”

He then urged the press to “take a page from George Orwell and just say, ‘This candidate has pledged that if a Democrat gets more votes, or if nonwhite people are supportive of the candidate who gets the most votes, they will try to overturn that election.’”
Stengel agreed, saying, “As Peter said, we have to use the kind of language that journalists are not trying to use, they’re trying to be objective. But there’s no objectivity in the face of someone trying to destroy and undermine our democracy.”

There’s something much worse than losing the House, and possibly the Senate, that’s rattling top Democrats who are studying polling and election trends:
The big picture: It’s the possibility of a re-elected President Trump with a compliant, filibuster-proof Senate majority in January 2025.
Why it matters: It’s impossible to forecast elections. But you can look at the states with Senate elections in 2024 and see why some Democrats are sounding the alarm.
“Democrats are sleepwalking into a Senate disaster,” Yale’s Simon Bazelon wrote last week on Matt Yglesias’ Substack, Slow Boring
- “The 2024 map is much worse,” Bazelon added.
- A close presidential election, he wrote, could doom Democratic Sens. Jon Tester in Montana … Joe Manchin in West Virginia … Sherrod Brown in Ohio … Bob Casey in Pennsylvania … Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin … Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona.
- Plus toss-ups could threaten Sens. Debbie Stabenow in Michigan and Jackie Rosen in Nevada.
- In all those states, hardcore liberalism is a tough sell.
Then factor in that most of the GOP senators who stood up to Trump and his brand of politics will be gone: Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, who are retiring after this term, and former Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona.
- Now toss in the widespread belief in both parties that the House majority will be lost by Democrats in 2022 — and maintained, if not expanded, in 2024.
- Plus perhaps the most worrisome indicator for Democrats on the political dashboard: The party’s edge with Hispanic voters has shrunk.
So you see why John Anzalone, President Biden’s campaign pollster, recently told a Politico podcast this is “the worst political environment that I’ve lived through in 30 years of being a political consultant.”
There are several ways Democrats could overcome the GOP’s decisive map edge:
- Dems could nominate a presidential candidate who wins decisively — with a clear majority. That typically lifts party candidates in close races.
- Or the GOP could nominate a presidential candidate who can’t command a majority, or unelectable Senate candidates. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell warns anyone who’ll listen that if the GOP keeps putting up fringe candidates, the party will blow an epic opportunity.
The bottom line: David Shor, one of Democrats’ most respected data scientists, has been sounding the alarm for months. “Unless we see big structural changes in the Democratic party’s coalition,” he tweeted, the 2024 outcome could be “Donald Trump winning a *filibuster-proof trifecta* [House, Senate, White House] with a minority of the vote.”
